Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut this year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Price increases has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed usually studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs created to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in early September, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in August.

The figure of positions added to the economy in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Show Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to release September’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release once the closure started. Private payroll firm ADP reported earlier this month that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in September, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still released its inflation report for September that indicated that prices are going up, although slowly. Prices rose three percent over the last year, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
