Together Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a test for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate horror films: Sit down with your significant other and watch Together. This independent film success of 2025 just made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like standard physical horror, but within Together exists a profound meditation about our choices in loving our partners.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the actors infuse a unique chemistry to their characters, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The narrative commences when Tim and Millie relocate from the big city to the rural area for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the conventions conclude. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their new home, a storm hits, and the two fall into an underground cave. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a strange force starts to affect the pair. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a methodically building horror experience, weaving in moments of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components neatly and wraps them up in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is only the two lead actors, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and removed from his social circle. He dreads the notion of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he can’t drive and needs Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he never makes Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

The couple grapple with the type of challenges that are inherent in most partnerships after ten years. At their core, they continue to care for one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these concerns of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to another person, the metaphor never feels hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a strong argument for remaining unattached. On the other hand, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the ending sow anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your significant other and state, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform at present.
